Snorkels
Snorkels are a tube that allows a person to breathe while underwater. Standard size, a snorkel is about 12” long and J-shaped, fitted with a mouthpiece made of rubber or plastic. Known also as a snorkel mask, when the snorkel is attached by a strap to the mask. Some snorkels have a “sump” device in the mouth piece that allows a small amount of water to remain without being inhaled when the diver breathes in.
Among standard snorkel information, some will also have a one-way valve, and will drain the sump as water fills it. Also, float-operated valves are attached to the end of the tube and keeps water out as a diver goes below water. While standard length for a snorkel is 12”, they can be as much as 20,” lengths longer than that can result in difficulty breathing, as the house will be too long.
Snorkel fins come in two basic styles – a full foot fin or one with an adjustable strap. While both are useful the foot fins are lighter, while the adjustable straps on fins allow for the use of scuba boots. This can be an important factor when first looking to invest in equipment, as not needing boots can decrease the amount of up front money.
A snorkel vest comes with an easy access or an inflator, a back waistband and tail strap for the best fit, comes in two sizes for adults and children. The vest is not a life jacket – though it does float and will not let the wearer sink with one way inflation for quick release, mobility and comfort. The added support and safety when most needed.
While mentioning that a snorkel is needed will bring thoughts of a dive shop and the adventurous journey, some may think more of trucks. Another sort of snorkel, known as an Arb snorkel is some of the best insurance for an engine. The quickest way to damage a car or truck is for water to get in the engine. With these snorkels, there is no worry about the water level is up to the air intake and taking on water. Snorkel kits are available for most vehicles. Snorkel equipment can often be purchased in a package – this can ensure all pieces are compatible and are helpful for those who may be looking at scuba equipment for the first time. Snorkel sets consist of a hypo-allergenic lens mask with a purge valve and swivel buckles, a silicone snorkel with purge and shoe fins.
